Root canal treatment (RCT)

A root canal treats infection or damage inside a tooth, allowing the natural tooth to be kept rather than removed. It is carried out under local anaesthesia and, in many cases, can be completed in a single sitting depending on the tooth.

How it helps

What this treatment helps with

Persistent toothache or sensitivity to hot and cold
An infected, abscessed or deeply decayed tooth
A cracked or damaged tooth where the nerve is affected
Keeping a natural tooth that would otherwise need removal
Step by step

What to expect

Your exact plan is confirmed after a clinical examination.

1

Examination & X-ray

We assess the tooth and take an X-ray to understand the extent of the infection or damage.

2

Local anaesthesia

The tooth and surrounding area are numbed so the procedure is comfortable.

3

Cleaning the canals

The infected tissue is removed and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and shaped.

4

Filling & sealing

The canals are filled and the tooth is sealed. A crown is often advised afterwards to protect it.

Questions

Frequently asked

The treatment is done under local anaesthesia, so most patients feel little to no discomfort during the procedure. Mild tenderness for a day or two afterwards is normal and usually settles with simple care.
A treated tooth can become more brittle, so a crown is often recommended to protect it and restore normal function. We advise you based on the specific tooth at your appointment.
Many root canals are completed in a single sitting, while some teeth need two visits. We will tell you what to expect after examining the tooth.
