Caring for your dental implants

25 June 2026 · 4 min read · by Dr. Niti Nathani, B.D.S., M.D.S. (Prosthodontics) · MSDC Reg. No. A-52049

Dental implants can serve you well for years with everyday care that is much like caring for natural teeth. Here is a simple, general guide.

Treat them like natural teeth

An implant-supported crown does not decay the way a natural tooth can, but the gum and bone that support the implant still need healthy upkeep. Brushing twice a day and cleaning between your teeth helps keep the surrounding tissues healthy.

Your dentist can show you the cleaning aids — such as interdental brushes or floss designed for implants — that suit your particular restoration.

Keep up with check-ups

Regular reviews let your dentist check the implant, the crown and the surrounding gum, and clean areas that are harder to reach at home. Catching small issues early is generally simpler than addressing them later.

Habits that help

Avoid using your teeth as tools and be mindful with very hard foods. If you grind your teeth at night, mention it to your dentist, who can advise whether a night guard is appropriate for you.
